The wind tunnel test
Print E-mail

The team under the turbine. The question was: Do the patient transport and emergency ambulances from Ambulanz Mobile really have so good aerodynamics as promised by the brochures or do they simply only look good? Because everything that could basically only be assumed should be put to the test for the first time.  In order to answer this question, a conventional emergency ambulance box and, representing the products of Ambulanz Mobile, a Tigis and a Delfis made their way from Schönebeck to Stuttgart on March 30, 2009.

Once arrived, the vehicles had to be arranged and washed on the shielded premises of Daimler AG in the area of the wind tunnel complex. On the next morning, it had finally and irrevocably arrived: the day of truth. Something would be at stake for Ambulanz Mobile. Because if these tests were not positive for Tigis and Delfis, the main arguments for also developing the integrated system for Hornis and Tauris would no longer have any basis.

The Tigis in the wind tunnel.

Even with the initial ideas and planning of the new Tigis RTW concept which is unique in history and for the company, a lot of noise was made about the possible appearance. An emergency ambulance based on a box body with the Ambulanz Mobile design? Is that even feasible, and what about the aerodynamics which are so important for Ambulanz Mobile?

The Tigis development team should impressively prove that these two components do not necessarily have to contradict each other and can very probably form a visual and technical symbiosis.

The vehicle arrangement of the Tigis in the wind tunnel started at 7 a.m. Great interest in the Ambulanz Mobile vehicles could be noticed for all those present, The first measurement was carried out with the new Tigis RTW. The result was eagerly waited for.

Breakaway edge for the Delfis.

The result: great astonishment for the employees of Daimler AG and great relief on the part of the representatives and developers from Ambulanz Mobile. The new emergency ambulance based on a box body has a sensational cd-value. The basic shape of the Tigis is so good that further optimisation attempts also produced no more improvements. As an aside, it can be said that the Delfis of course also has nothing to hide. Both values are only minimally above the original values of the base vehicle.

Thus, all the endeavours of Ambulanz Mobile have now been confirmed officially. The vehicles not "only" look good, but are also particularly efficient.
